Description

Inositol, also known as cyclohexanol, is widely distributed in animals and plants and is a growh factor for animals and microorganisms. It was first isolated from animal internal organs. Inositol has multiple cis and trans isomers in nature, and the naturally occurring isomer is cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-cyclohexanol. Inositol can be regarded chemically as a polyhydric hydrocarbon derivative of cyclohexane. In theory, there are 9 possible isomers, such as inositol, epi-inositol, scyllo-inositol and so on. Almost all living things contain inositol in free or bound state. It exists as inositol hexaphosphate in the nucleated red blood cells of plants and birds in the form of hexaphosphate. Compounds with fewer phosphate groups than this compound are also distributed in plants and animals.
